Greasy’s Offer

Jisana fretted in the corner of the bench while staring at the cell door. Last night, they’d almost finished smoothing out the bottom hinge pin with the piece of stone. Tonight, they would finish so they could try to escape. She didn’t expect to succeed, but it would be enough if she killed Greasy to ensure Harpin remembered her.

Niamo was another name on her kill list. Ending that traitor would satisfy Jisana’s psyche, allowing her to go to the Hall of the Gods in peace. She had never been one to praise the Divinities or even believe in them. But as she approached her end, she found trusting in them brought a new tranquility to her soul.

Tonight, she would slip out with Arima to sow her own form of vengeance on Harpin. Just as important as killing her tormentors, she also wanted to die in a fight rather than swinging at the end of the hangman’s rope. The latter death was for thieves, not heroes.

Her biggest concern was if Niamo had discovered what they were doing to the door hinges. She may have uncovered them the previous night before betraying them to the guards yesterday. Jisana glanced at Arima beside her. The young woman was staring straight ahead. Did she feel the same way? Even making the query would send Emini into tears because she thought they had a chance to survive.

Unable to ask the question she wanted to, Jisana asked Arima, “Do you have family outside?”

“Both my parents will miss me. But my younger sister won’t because she’s in love with a Harpin soldier. She used to drive me crazy with all her talk about how the first kingdom was saving us from ourselves.”

“Still, she’ll remember you fondly. If not today, then soon. Even the young ones grow up eventually.”

“What about you? Do you have folk outside?” Arima asked.

“No family. Valuable friends, though. Someone who’s like my father and another I’d let be my children’s father. But I’m a rebel, so I’ve no time for motherhood until Otanic is free.”

Arima reached out to clasp Jisana’s hand. “I don’t think we’ll live to see tomorrow’s sunset,” she whispered.

“Nor I. But I wouldn’t destroy Emini’s dreams. We need her strong for tonight.”

The lock in the metal-studded door clicked, and Greasy stepped in. He often scowled, but not this time. Two large jailers stood behind him.

“I’s moving ya’s ta another cell,” he said.

“Why?” Emini asked, her voice distressed.

“Some ‘un tries ta release our convicts last night. So tha boss says ta me, ‘moves ‘em prisoners. We’s can’ts let ‘ems free ya bitches.’ I’s wants ta sees ya hang.”

Niamo! Jisana didn’t doubt the woman’s role in this move. Yet Greasy’s words about someone trying to free the captives rang true. Did her rebels try? She feared for Haam.

Jisana tapped Arima on the shoulder as she stood. Hope for killing guards was gone for now. They moved toward Greasy.

As she exited the cell, Jisana whispered to Emini, “Be careful. Say nothing to give us away.
